Neural 3D reconstruction benchmark for laboratory robots

A compute-platform benchmark examines neural 3D reconstruction trade-offs for laboratory robots, comparing NeRF, Gaussian Splatting and a preliminary SAM3D assessment.

Workflow level n/a Source: Preprint (not peer-reviewed) Outcome: Author-reported

Research applicability

Supports research decisions about perception pipelines for autonomous laboratory manipulation, where compute latency and geometric detail matter.

Getting started

Read the cited primary abstract and paper to assess fit. Suggested adoption steps are editorial and untested; obtain and check detailed methods before implementation.

Maintenance

Research-publication record; deployment and maintenance not verified.

License

No software or data licence independently audited.

Workflow & human oversight

Platform-level automation is author-described; workflow level left unspecified because scope and researcher responsibilities depend on the implementation. Human safety and research oversight remain required.

Workflow level is not an evidence score; higher is not better evidence.

Approach

The authors evaluate training and rendering on GPU-enabled devices spanning single-board computers to server-class nodes, and compare single-image reconstruction against per-scene optimization in latency and fidelity.

Outcomes (as reported by the originating team)

The authors report higher rendering quality for Gaussian Splatting than NeRF at greater GPU cost and warn that preliminary SAM3D geometry can have manipulation-relevant detail mismatches. These findings are not independently reproduced.

Limitations

Abstract-only review. Results are author-reported; device specifications, datasets, metric definitions and implementation settings were not inspected. SAM3D assessment is explicitly preliminary. Workshop peer review is asserted in arXiv comments, not independently confirmed; evidence is conservatively labelled preprint. No dataset distribution is implied by the benchmark-dataset taxonomy.

Reproducibility

Primary abstract source and identity checked on 2026-10-17; no software, hardware or reported outcome reproduced.

Adoption requirements

Editorial, untested guidance: consult the paper for exact hardware, scene data and metrics; evaluate on the intended robot compute stack and validate geometric errors under supervised, safe manipulation tests. No downloadable benchmark package was verified.
