Use case Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory 2023
A-Lab: an autonomous laboratory for the accelerated synthesis of inorganic materials
An autonomous laboratory for solid-state synthesis of inorganic powders that combines computations, literature-mined data, machine learning and robotics. Over 17 days of continuous operation the authors report it realized 41 novel compounds from a set of 58 targets, including oxides and phosphates.

Workflow & human oversight
Iterative synthesis planning, robotic execution and interpretation with active-learning feedback within predefined targets. Humans provide targets and infrastructure, oversee safety and validate phase identification; autonomous operation does not establish correctness.
Workflow level is not an evidence score; higher is not better evidence.
Problem
Discovering and synthesizing new inorganic materials is bottlenecked by slow, expert-intensive solid-state synthesis campaigns. The authors ask whether planning, execution and interpretation of synthesis can be closed into an autonomous loop grounded in thermodynamic data.
Approach
Targets were identified using large-scale ab initio phase-stability data from the Materials Project and Google DeepMind. Synthesis recipes were proposed by natural-language models trained on the literature and optimized with an active-learning approach grounded in thermodynamics; experiments were planned, run and interpreted by robotics.
Outcomes (as reported by the originating team)
The authors report that over 17 days of continuous operation the A-Lab realized 41 novel compounds from 58 targets. The publication additionally analyzes failed syntheses and frames them as actionable feedback for improving materials screening and synthesis design (Szymanski et al., Nature, 2023).
Limitations
Reported performance is author-reported and was debated publicly after publication; a 2025 Author Correction was issued (see sources). Scope is solid-state synthesis of inorganic powders, and the pipeline depends on specific robotics and on large ab initio datasets. Not independently reproduced.
Reproducibility
Synthesis recipes, targets, and characterization data are documented in the publication and its supplementary information. No public end-to-end code repository for the A-Lab platform was verified at source-check time (the repository located during checking returned 404).
Adoption requirements
Robotic solid-state synthesis and characterization infrastructure; compute for ab initio phase-stability analysis; access to Materials Project data; expertise to triage failed syntheses rather than accept robot output blindly.
