Workflow / process 2025

Mephisto

Mephisto uses tree-guided galaxy fitting and memory-based refinement. Its author evaluation includes 256 COSMOS2020 galaxies and 31 Little Red Dots; a knowledge comparison uses 208 training and 48 held-out galaxies. Comparable statistical fits do not uniquely establish physical explanations. The cited code archive returned 429 and was not retried; implementation version and independent replication remain unverified.

Research applicability

Documented physics research workflow, with source-version and evaluation limits retained.

Getting started

Read the primary manuscript and its limitations first. Check implementation access and terms separately; this review did not run an installation, API call to a research system, or experiment.

Maintenance

Source snapshot checked 2026-10-19. Current availability and experimental version parity are separate claims.

License

Research code/data/manuscript terms require separate verification; repository metadata alone is not a reuse clearance.

Workflow & human oversight

L3 applies only to the researcher-directed galaxy-fitting search. Researchers supply observations/problem settings; the described language interface permits understanding, validating and guiding decisions. This is not evidence of an expert user study. Tree search proposes CIGALE configurations, runs fits and uses discrepancies/memory for refinement. Configured tree search and data/model bounds limit the method. Similar statistical fits do not resolve physical degeneracy; no unconditional runtime or correctness guarantee.

Workflow level is not an evidence score; higher is not better evidence.

Approach

CIGALE model proposals, execution and fit evaluation form bounded DFS/BFS searches with four candidate branches, temporal memory and a distilled knowledge base. Researcher objectives/resources determine search; experts must interpret physical alternatives.

Outcomes (as reported by the originating team)

Author tests256COSMOS2020galaxies and31LittleRedDots. Baseline≈360milliongridpoints; memory comparison spans256. Knowledge derives from208galaxies and is tested on48heldout:failureprobability.68→.57 atχ²/baseline>1.2 is11percentage points, not11%relative.

Limitations

Betterχ²/model agreement is not unique physical truth:AGN/starburst alternatives fit similarly. Grid-size ratios are not universal end-to-end speedups. Historic model/token costs, visual limitations and prepared-data dependence constrain transfer; no independent replication. Journal-formatted text says submitted, not verified acceptance.

Reproducibility

Author-reported; independent replication not established in this review. Documentary review only; no candidate code, model, simulation or experiment was executed. A public repository or result artifact is not proof of replication.

Adoption requirements

Untested suggestion: inspect the pinned sources and validate data, evaluator assumptions, implementation availability and researcher controls before planning a bounded trial. No setup or trial was executed.
